Home Accommodation Rentals – The Facts

What is Home Accommodation?
Home accommodation refers to that category of visitor accommodation that is offered by individuals and families outside of the realm of the traditional commercial tourism setting. It is part of an overall thrust to develop and encourage community tourism. Home Accommodation is classified as follows:

  • “Room(s) to Let”
A dwelling house where lodging or sleeping accommodation in no more than four (4) bedrooms is provided for compensation to persons who are not members of the immediate family of the operator or owner.

  • “Bed and Breakfast”
A dwelling house where temporary lodging or sleeping accommodation in no more than four (4) bedrooms, is provided with breakfast for compensation to persons who are not members of the immediate family of the operator or owner and such use shall be subordinate to the principal use of the dwelling as an owner occupied residence.

  • Family Apartments
  • Furnished premises comprising self-contained units in which sleeping accommodation and self catering facilities are provided in no more than nine (9) bedrooms to the visiting public for short-term lodging and for compensation.

Certification
The Barbados Tourism Authority has approved all properties listed on the Home Accommodation page for use as visitor accommodation. To gain such approval they were required to satisfy the stipulations of several government agencies including:

  • The Ministry of Tourism
  • The Barbados Tourism Authority
  • The Environmental Protection Department
  • The Electrical Engineering Department
  • The Ministry of Health
  • The Town and Country Development Planning Office
  • The Barbados Fire Service

These stipulations relate to such things as service and hospitality, safety and security, health and sanitation, room sizes and facilities, the buildings and the environment, signage, parking and some other matters.

Objectives
The objectives of developing Home Accommodation are to:

  • Allow visitors to experience what it is like to live in a “Bajan” home like a “Bajan”.
  • Encourage more Barbadians to become involved in the tourism industry and to allow then to do so by providing rooms as a small business.
  • Increase the number of rooms that Barbados will have to offer visitors.
  • Provide tourists to Barbados with another choice of accommodation.
  • Encourage Barbadians to become involved in providing accommodation within their homes.
