Located in the Eastern Caribbean chain of islands, St. Lucia lies at latitude 13.54° North of the Equator and 60.50° West. This Windward Island of 238 square miles (27 miles long and 14 miles wide) is roughly: - 1300 miles from Florida
- 21 miles from Martinique
- 26 miles from St. Vincent
Due to its volcanic nature St. Lucia is home to one of the Caribbean's most impressive landmarks Gros Piton (797m) and Petit Piton (750m). In addition to these majestic volcanic cones the island boasts a stunning array of soaring mountains peaks, lush forests and sandy beaches.
The first inhabitants of St. Lucia were the Arawak Indians around 200 A.D., who were forced off the island by the Caribs in 800 A.D. Explored by Spain and then France, St. Lucia became a British territory in 1814 and one of the Windward Islands in 1871. With other Windward Islands, St. Lucia was granted home rule in 1967 as one of the West Indies Associated States. On Feb. 22, 1979, St. Lucia achieved full independence.
Temperatures range from 70 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit in this tropical climate. The island experiences a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May.
