Tobago can be found at Latitude 11°N and Longitude 60°W. It is located thirty kilometres northeast of Trinidad, from which a channel thirty-seven kilometres wide separates it. With a total area of 116 square miles this cigar-shaped island is 26 miles in length and 7 miles in width. Tobago's terrain is mountainous and dominated by the Main Ridge, which is 29 kilometres long with elevations up to 640 meters. There are deep, fertile valleys stretching north and south of the Main Ridge. Although Tobago is volcanic in origin, there are no active volcanoes. The island is carpeted in thick, leafy rainforest and graced with a backdrop of rugged hills, offering spectacular landscapes of the blue bays and the numerous small beaches that lie beneath them. There are waterfalls, rivers and nature trails through the rainforest where a staggering array of wildlife exists.
Amerindians moving north from the South American mainland settled Tobago over 2,500 years ago. Columbus on his third transatlantic voyage visited Tobago in 1498. Tobago was "discovered" by the English in 1508 it was then fought over by the Dutch, Spanish, English, and French well into the 18th Century. The English controlled the island from 1762; it was officially ceded to the English in 1814. The island's rich soils saw Tobago being used predominantly for agricultural production. In 1962 both Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Britain and finally became a republic in 1976.
The twin Isle experiences a tropical climate with average maximum temperatures of 89°Fahrenheit. Tobago's temperatures are cooler, owing to the more constant northeast trade winds. There is a dry season from January to May and a wet season from June to December.
